Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or by hand until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. If using, fold in the raisins.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times to bring it together. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.

Using a sharp knife, cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf about 1/4 inch deep.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
