Ingredients

8 Servings
  • 480 g all-purpose flour
  • 6 g baking powder
  • 5 g baking soda
  • 60 g butter
  • 480 ml buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 150 g raisins
  • 5 g salt
  • 50 g sugar

Directions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
Step 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3
Cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or by hand until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4
In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. If using, fold in the raisins.
Step 5
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times to bring it together. Form the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 6
Using a sharp knife, cut an 'X' into the top of the loaf about 1/4 inch deep.
Step 7
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 8
Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature.
