Japanese Rice Balls

Onigiri, or Japanese rice balls, are a popular snack or meal made from seasoned rice shaped into balls or triangles and often wrapped in nori (seaweed). They can be filled with various fillings such as pickled plum, tuna, or salmon.

Ingredients

  • 360 g Japanese short-grain rice
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise
  • 3 Nori sheets
  • 3 Pickled plum
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 150 g Tuna
  • 480 ml Water

Directions

Step 1
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
Combine the rinsed rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Step 3
Once the rice is cooked, let it sit for 10 minutes to cool slightly.
Step 4
Wet your hands with water and sprinkle with salt to prevent the rice from sticking to your hands.
Step 5
Take a handful of rice and flatten it slightly in your hand.
Step 6
Place a small amount of your desired filling (pickled plum, tuna with mayonnaise) in the center of the rice.
Step 7
Fold the rice around the filling to form a ball or triangle shape, pressing gently to mold it together.
Step 8
Wrap a strip of nori around each rice ball.
Step 9
Serve immediately or wrap in plastic wrap for later consumption.
