In a large pot, cook the Italian sausage with the red pepper flakes over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon and set aside.

In the same pot, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon fat in the pot.

Add the diced onion to the pot and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Pour in the chicken broth and water, and bring to a boil. Add the sliced potatoes and cook until tender, about 10 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and add the cooked sausage, bacon, and chopped kale. Simmer until the kale is tender, about 5 minutes.
